ADVENT WITH CHILDREN by Candice Duffy

Day 5
Mary's Response

Today, we are reading the same passage of scripture we did yesterday, Luke 1:26-38. We are focusing on Mary and her response. Even though the angel Gabriel was telling her news that was literally going to turn her world as she knew it upside down, her response in verse 38 was, "I am the Lord's servant. May everything you have said to me come true." Her response consisted of a realization that she was on this earth to serve in whatever capacity God called her. Many times God asks us to serve Him in ways that aren't easy and sometimes even scary or uncomfortable. We talked about how Mary must have felt. Yes, she was probably scared. Scared of what people would think. Scared her fiancee would desert her. Scared of becoming isolated and alone, talked about and labeled. But despite all those insecurities, she chose to serve. To embrace the priviledge she'd been given to be Christ's mother. I asked my children if they could think of ways to serve like Mary. They came up with some good ones. I bet your children can come up with a pretty good list too of how they can serve their family and friends and even those around them who just need us to be Jesus to them. Our ornament today was Mary. A reminder to always be willing to serve when called, no matter the cost.
