ADVENT WITH CHILDREN by Candice Duffy

Day 16
Jesus Wrapped in a Cloth

There has been a lot for us to talk about in Luke 2:1-7, and today we finished out this passage focusing on the cloth Jesus was wrapped in. Scripture specifically says, "She [Mary] wrapped him snuggly in strips of cloth and laid him in a manger." This is important because as we will soon learn, this is how the shepherds would find baby Jesus and recognize him. The ornament today was to take a small ornament ball (draw a face on the ball) and wrap a cloth around it. I didn't have a small enough ball, so we just cut some felt out to symbolize the cloth Jesus was wrapped in. We also read Mark 15. This passage tells of Jesus' death. We specifically looked at verse 46 -"Joseph bought a long sheet of linen cloth. Then he took Jesus' body down from the cross, wrapped it in the cloth, and laid it in a tomb that had been carved out of the rock." How interesting that Jesus was wrapped in cloth not only when he was born, but also when he died. Could it be that God wanted to remind us even in the beginning at his birth, that Jesus came for one purpose? To die for us? I don't think that's far fetched at all, and it was amazing to see the realization dawn in Eli's eyes as we discussed it.
