ADVENT WITH CHILDREN by Candice Duffy

Day 12
Mary and Joseph Travel to Bethlehem
Our passage of scripture we read today was Luke 2:1-7. Here we learn why Mary and Joseph had to make the long trip to Bethlehem. The government handed out a law that made everyone return to their hometown to be counted.  Mary and Joseph were just two people in the very overcrowded town of Bethlehem. They searched everywhere but found not a single place with an open room. We talked about how uncomfortable it probably was to be in an unfamiliar town, ready to have a baby and unable to find a place to rest. God had a special plan, though, for Mary and Joseph!

Take a bag and add 1 cup of rice, a tablespoon of hand sanitizer, and a few drops of food coloring. Mix it up (FYI: be sure that 1. your bag is securely fastened and 2. your child doesn't go crazy wild with the shaking lest you have colored rice all over your kitchen!!! Yes, I say this from experience!) Allow the rice to dry on some paper towels or a plate. Fill your jar 3/4 full and then place two marbles in the jar.We used some snowman buttons because it's what I had. My children started giggling uncontrollably that Mary and Joseph looked like snow people! Glue the lid onto the top of the jar. Take turns looking for the marbles inside your jar and take time to discuss what it was like for Mary and Joseph in such a crowded town.
