ADVENT WITH CHILDREN by Candice Duffy

 Day 4
An Angel Visits Mary

Today, we read Luke 1:26-38 and learned that just as Gabriel visited Zechariah in yesterday's reading, he visits Mary with similar news. She will also have a baby. Not just any baby, though, God's son. She is to name him Jesus because he will be the Savior of all mankind. Just as it was (in the world's eyes) impossible for Zechariah and Elizabeth to have a baby, it was impossible for Mary to have a baby as well. She wasn't married to Joseph yet, and well....since my children are 8, 6, 3 and 21 months...we left it at that :) The whole virgin birth talk is coming all too soon I'm certain, but not today :) Today, they were content to know that since Mary and Joseph weren't married, they couldn't possibly have a baby. Again, God did the impossible. We talked about how Mary's response to the angel was different from Zechariah's. Mary believed. We talked about how frightened she must have been and how crazy it must have seemed for an angel to be telling her something that seemed impossible. Again, we are reminded that God is faithful. He always does what he says he will do, even when it seems impossible. Mary was going to give birth to her (and our) redeemer, Jesus.

Using a jingle bell, pipe cleaner, scrap book paper, and some ribbon, we worked together to make an angel to hang on our garland, a reminder that the angel Gabriel foretold the coming of Jesus to Mary, a woman chosen by God to be Christ's earthly mother.
