ADVENT WITH CHILDREN by Candice Duffy

Day 3
Believe God!

Day 3 brings us to the story of Zechariah found in Luke 1:5-25. We learn about a baby that is coming. Not Jesus (yet) but John, his cousin.  Gabriel, one of God's angels visits Zechariah and tells him that he and his wife Elizabeth will have a son. He didn't believe God immediately. He doubted because he and Elizabeth were too old to have children. Does this sound like another story in the Bible? My children picked up on that right off! Abraham and Sarah, right! We learned today that because Zechariah chose to not believe the angel God had sent, his consequence was not being able to speak until his child was born. There are always consequences for our sin. Scripture proves time and time again that we have a faithful God. He ALWAYS does what he says he will do! Even when everything in our world tells us it's impossible. God keeps his word and we should never doubt. Believe!!!

The ornament for the day is Zechariah. You are supposed to use a clear bubble from bubble wrap to symbolize his inability to speak. I didn't have bubble wrap, so we improvised and used Saran Wrap made to look like a round bubble. Worked well!

We actually had something happen during our ornament making time that further proved a part of our lesson today. Noah kept grabbing the scissors while I was working with one of my other children, and despite my requests for him to put the scissors down, he failed to obey. He ended up cutting himself on them. As sad as I was that he was bleeding and hurting, it was definitely time to use the situation to remind him that like Zechariah, we too have consequences for our sin. Noah cut his finger because he didn't obey me when I asked him to put the scissors down. His "boo boo" will get better (good for him a lot sooner than 9 months like Zechariah had to wait!) but I think he understands a little more today that we all sin and have consequences as a result.

Thank you God for a teachable moment (however painful) today with  my children!
