Last weekend, I had the privilege to serve as a Dnow leader for my church in Jackson. The theme of the weekend was based off our speaker Jeremy Kingsley’s book Be last, Descending to Greatness. I was incredibly blessed, convicted, and challenged by this book; I highly recommend it.
Our culture and this world tell us life is all about us; we live in a “me” centered world. The truth is, life is about knowing Jesus and making Him known. “Life is not about us or becoming the greatest in the world’s eyes by achieving some lofty personal, academic, athletic, corporate, or financial goal. Life is about serving others. It’s about connecting with God and doing what he says” (Jeremy Kingsley).
To learn how we live last, we must look at the life of Christ. Jesus, the greatest of all, left glory to be born in a nasty, cold, and smelly stable. He was a friend to the lowly, oppressed, and rejected. He made his triumphal entrance into Jerusalem not on a majestic stallion, but a young mule. At the last supper, Jesus took the job usually reserved for the lowest of the low servants—he washed the disciples’ feet. Jesus did perform many miracles during His time on earth, but the majority of his time was spent with the needy. Jesus was humble. Humility plus service equals greatness. “For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve” (Mark 10:45).
The desire of our hearts should be to put Jesus and others first. Instead of self-centered, we are called to be selfless and sacrificial. This life is not about you, dear friends; it’s all about Jesus. Being first, the best, most popular, most beautiful, or most liked is not the key to joy. True Joy comes from knowing, loving, and serving Jesus and others. Check your pride this week. Have you elevated yourself more than you should? “He must increase, but I must decrease.” (John 3:30). The way up is actually down.
